Matchmaking Complaint

Lichess banned (probably as the account was suddenly deleted soon after creation) a smurf (~2700 rating) who beat me (2304 at the time) at 1500 provisional and didn’t refund rating.

Why is this sort of smurfing and rating deduction a feature when I shouldn’t lose large quantities of rating against 2700s as someone around 2300?

Furthermore, why is it the case that sometimes I wait for 10 mins+ for matchmaking only to play a couple 30 second games with one opponent who is 200, 300 or more rating away from me? It takes me some time to warm up for bullet both mentally and hands (I play on phone in cold temperatures). So there is a significant disadvantage from waiting so long between games. I genuinely lose to 2100s from cold hands (statistically very unlikely at the frequency from today especially after beating a 2600+ in the same hour). I don’t want to play players several hundred rating below me; I don’t want to wait 10 mins to play 30 seconds where I will play worse due to no warmup. Furthermore, you lose rating disproportionately against lower rated players each time a loss is incurred due to factors such as cold hands or bad connection (the latter also being demonstrable).

Genuinely tragic matchmaking. Lichess should consider an option of matchmaking for an “X” games minimum against the opponent you get so we don’t spend more time waiting than playing.

E.g. I select 10 games minimum and someone else selects 10; we both get paired to play 10 games. There should not be many options here, so as to make sure that we don’t excessively divide matchmaking further; e.g. having a 10 game minimum being the only option being fine.

You may also integrate matchmaking, such that you get normal matchmaking until you find a 10 game minimum pair and then both players get an alert and may accept.

Please fix your matchmaking.

"didn’t refund rating" * Do not worry about rating. It will adjust itself quickly. You lost rating, so now you are underrated. So you will gain more rating when you win a game and lose less rating when you lose a game.

"why is it the case that sometimes I wait for 10 mins+" * If you are high rated, there are few opponents.

"It takes me some time to warm up for bullet both mentally and hands" * You can play anonymously to warm up.

"I don’t want to play players several hundred rating below me; I don’t want to wait 10 mins" * It is either or at your bullet rating. Maybe play some blitz or rapid.

"warmup" * Play anonymously to warm up.

"option of matchmaking for an “X” games minimum against the opponent" * Makes no sense.

"until you find a 10 game minimum pair" * Finding a 10 game will be harder than finding 1 game.

“Do not worry about rating. It will adjust itself quickly”

It’s also about the principle. Rule violating multi-account smurfs who get accounts deleted quickly should be a sufficient reason for a rating refund.

“"why is it the case that sometimes I wait for 10 mins+" * If you are high rated, there are few opponents.”

Yes, this is a platitude. The question was somewhat rhetorical; however, the point of the issue is: long breaks between games rather than a long wait as an issue in itself.

“You can play anonymously to warm up.”

The gameplay is quite different. In fact, by warming up in a style sufficiently different to your opponents, you may actually disadvantage yourself by getting used to a different tempo. This is a decent idea, though for hands. However, by warming up here you may also fatigue hands and slow them down for the rated games.

“"option of matchmaking for an “X” games minimum against the opponent" * Makes no sense.”

Figure of speech/exaggeration? Maybe you are not a fan of the idea which is understandable but to say it makes no sense is somewhat too big of a claim, don’t you think?

“"until you find a 10 game minimum pair" * Finding a 10 game will be harder than finding 1 game.”

Yes, hence the idea expressed near the end with multi-queue. Also the problem for me consists also of the long breaks between the games not a long wait by itself.

Maybe just play tournaments. Waiting times are small and after the first games you get commensurate opponents.

I think this is a good idea, multi-game matches are common both in casual OTB and competitive play, but it would undoubtedly take a long time to pair, and I don't think many other people would utilize it unfortunately.

multi game matches

use the rematch feature, this is entirely optional

the point is that this way you can filter by opponents who will rematch; many won't otherwise.

Say you are 2260 and seek a bullet game against a player of the same rating.
10 minutes later another 2260 turns up who seeks at his rating.
You get a game after 10 minutes and he after 0 minutes.

Say you are 2260 and seek a series of 10 bullet game against a player of the same rating.
10 minutes later another 2260 turns up who seeks a bullet game at his rating.
Neither of you get paired, as you seek 10 games and he seeks 1 game.

10 minutes later another 2260 turns up who seeks a series of 20 bullet games at his rating.
Neither of you get paired, as you seek 10 games and he seeks 20 games.

10 minutes later another 2260 turns up who agrees to a series of 10 bullet games at his rating.
You finally get paired. However, after the first game he disconnects.
So you waited 30 minutes instead of 10 minutes to play 1 bullet game.
