How does it feel to play in Lichess4545 league?

@Tranzoo said in #10:

@okady is it not against Lichess ToS to use a physical chess board to improve calculation when playing on Lichess?

No. Plenty of people use physical boards to mirror their games.

I asked if it was against the ToS, not if plenty of people do it. Most of the people in my town smoke; should I do it too?

Let me quote a section from the ToS under "Fair Play Violations", 'We prohibit the use of any external assistance used whilst a game you are involved in is ongoing, which has the effect of improving your knowledge, calculation ability, or otherwise gives you an unfair advantage over your opponent.'

I'd say playing out variations on a physical chess board improves one's calculation ability and visualisation, does it not?

Yeah playing out variations on a board of course would be an issue. Just mirroring the position is not.

Okay. Then what would be the point of "just mirroring the position" on the physical board?

You will have to ask people who do it, not me. I just know lot of people like to do it for whatever reason(s). Best one I heard its good for getting better at OTB chess. Or perhaps some like it feels more "realistic" or makes them focus more, idk. It would probably make me focus a bit more if I made the effort to set-up a proper board for a game.

But again, I am wrong person to ask this.

I do it because I prefer looking at the board rather than starting at the screen for hours, because I grew up with otb and having a board makes all my good otb habits kick in (like sitting on your hands and taking your time and getting into focus flow) and I also want to maintain my otb habits for when I play otb again and a board does that much more than a screen and a mouse. If you get an e-board, you can actually just move pieces on the board itself and it will transmit to lichess, but I still played my moves on a board and made the move in lichess with my mouse before I had one.
Also playing on a physical board can simply be an aesthetically pleasing experience if you have a set you enjoy.

Yes, I started to play by a club and had a hard time to play OTB. So i got a board next to me and i am not playing out variations because its for OTB training so i just look at the board next to me and play from there.

Most of the time in the end i stop using the board and just play from pc. But it helps also a lot by not playing a move in 20 seconds if you see a good one.

Cool blog.
But it sounds a bit misleading. In the beginning there was the girlfriend wanting him to get a hobby. Then in a short time he has an established classical rating of 1870? From beginner to that in what sounds like a couple of days/weeks?
I think there might be parts missing, right? Like how much experience did you have beforehand?
