Short fiction: A Worthy Opponent

How long have you been a writer ... a fiction writer?

wouldn't it better to post the story serialized? I noted that you have several chapters. (I marked it to read over the weekend.)

I'm a ghost writer, and have been writing novels for about fifteen years. It has crossed my mind as well, that chess fits in a fiction story in many ways. It doesn't have to be the central theme, in fact it might be better if it was a side interest. Perhaps the characters discuss things over chess games.

Anyway, I liked what I read so far, marked the rest on my colander to read over the weekend.

Just finished your story. Yes I would definitely serialize the next one. Publish a chapter a day if you wish, but publishing steady increases your readership. It is not by accident that magazines did this with longer stories. You don't think they published the Hobbit in one go, do you? :-)

Rhythm, style and voice were all good. You have a strong storytelling presence. If your game is as strong... your opponents should be warry.

Hi there,

Thanks for reading and for the suggestion to serialize. I honestly hadn't thought of that, but it's a great idea.

I'm not a fiction writer at all and haven't really written something like this before. I'm tinkering with some non-fiction writing about cognitive science and chess, though, and ended up with this story idea in my head. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate the positive feedback! I was trying to figure out if it was worth trying to submit it somewhere and ended up feeling out of my depth. I'm mostly just glad some folks have read it.

Anyway, thank you again and best wishes!
