As promised, the solutions!
-
1 Bd1 (1... Kc1 2 Bb3 Kb1 3 Rd1#; 1... Ka2 2 Ra8+ Kb1 3 Ra1#)
-
1 Qh1 (1... Kb4 2 Qb1+ Ka4 3 Qa1+ Kb4 4 Bd6#; also 2... Kc3 3 Nf3# was nice) As I said, there were alternate mates after 1... Kb4; I've posted only the choicest ones. Black's other ideas lead to mate one move sooner, and are dealt with in more straightforward fashion (1... c3 2 Qb7 and 3 Qb5#; 1... Kc6 2 Qc6+ and either 2... Ka5 3 Qb5# or 2... Ka7 3 Nb5#...another pretty one)
-
1 Ne3 Kf4 2 Bf2 Kf3 3 Bh4 Kf4 4 Rf2#
-
1 Qf3 (1... Kd4 2 Kb5 d5 3 Nc6# or 2... Ke5 3 Nc6#--the only flaw here being that there are three mates in one after 2... e5; 1... d5 2 Kc5--and again there are unfortunately two mates after 2... d4)
-
1 Kf3 Kd4 2 Bb3 Kd3 3 Rd5#
-
1 Qd7 (1... Ke5 2 Ng4#--the nice one; 2... Kg6 Qf7#)

"I've never quite figured out how to post positions here"
- I guess the only way is to make it a study.
