I've played chess at a D&D gathering on more than one occasion.

It's a good idea. If only the investors were looking on chess websites for ideas ...

They always sold out. Wow
They are also the only hit if you google for DnD vacation.
2nd hit is someone asking on reddit if there is something similar to that if they don't want to fly overseas and getting things suggested that are similar but not the same.

the best part is "promoting personalities" ... the DM is the game. They promote the game that is to be played. If the DM is shit, the game is shit. Bad DM would equal to a 52 squares chessboard with 27 pieces

playing in a castleCastles are shit expensive to rent and to heat. And that for people that for a sizeable portion just want to attend a sports event. DnD is not a sports event.
and last but not least, there are nice tournaments on cruises, on vacation places etc where you pay that 3 k for 9 rounds playing at a nice place . those get promoted in chess magazines.

all in all, very superficial blog post 2/10

Some good points; which I feel OP already briefly addressed?
My take away was that it doesn't have to be super fancy or expensive to be a bit more polished and appealing?
Or are chess tournaments supposed to feel like an uninspired slog?

About the existing premium experience tournaments, good addition to the conversation. Well done, there.

...all in all, somewhat superficial comment; contributes substance but still seems to miss the point. 4/10 ;)

What is your idea of an ideal tournament in promotion and execution?

Unfortunately, Chess in the United States, while strangely popular, still lacks the cultural appeal that other sports offer. Chess in this country will always be viewed as that one game you played with your grandfather/grandmother in passing or that one game only "smart people" will play. Thus, esthetically interesting venues, promoters with some kind of experience, or event organizers may find it hard to argue that such events would be able to bring in that crisp green dollar that makes the world go round. In other words, the "niche" appeal of chess is seen more of a negative with the game rather than a positive one.

The work culture in the United States negatively impacts the appeal of extended chess tournaments. For those who work 9-5 jobs and/or work labor intensive jobs with only a set amount of paid-time-off and vacation days, I can see it being hard to be motivated to play chess instead of a relaxing day at the beach. I'm sure the D&D get together is not only fun, but relaxing as well. You could probably get a beer while playing and chat it up with friends. When I'm at chess tournament, it doesn't matter if I'm trying to relax in the hotel hot tub, the thought of my next game is always there and that negates any "relaxation" I may be trying to achieve.

If you read this whole thing, I appreciate it. I would love to see Chess tournaments be more like the D&D event I just read about.
