I, Robot? When to Play Like an Engine

2 tips about engine failures:

  • Use cloud computing which is easily accessible via a phone. You never experience anymore weak analysis on your phone. (Cloud also gives the additional benefit of no need to replicate or backup any analysis).
  • Always double check Leela analysis with Stockfish. https://tcec-chess.com/ shows once again Stockfish is clearly stronger. In fact I know grandmasters not using anymore Leela as too low return.

I’ll check out cloud engine on phone, thought it was only on laptops since it uses a lot of energy.
I double check Leela’s ideas with latest Fritz, it tends to make tactical oversights here and there.

https://chessify.me/mobile seems to offer on the mobile cloud computing.

https://mobile.chessbase.com/ can probably it also.

It is not for free of course.

Cheers. Great post. Another example of this is the 2020 candidates game game between Ding and Caruana (https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1993194)

Caruana just started jettisoning pawns in some very deep comp prep, but after the prep ended he found himself down material in a position where he had to keep finding extremely strong moves to maintain his initiative. He failed to do so. Even though Ding himself was down 16 minutes on his clock after his 16th move, he kept finding strong moves and Caruana eventually went on to lose the game.

If Fabi can't walk these tightropes with a huge time advantage in a deeply prepared line, it's insane for us mere mortals to imagine we might be able to!

Interesting blog. Well written.

Don't skydive without a parachute

its not even that, its the fact you two somehow kept the pieces on the board while falling at terminal velocity is what i find most impressive

Another great example that didn’t remember. I wonder at what point Caruana realized he lost control...

I really enjoyed reading your reflections on chess and the mental effort it requires. I love chess too, but I also like to switch off sometimes with something lighter. For me, games like Aviator on the South African platform https://easybet-casino.co.za/casino-games/aviator are perfect for that. They’re exciting, quick, and don’t demand hours of deep calculation, so I can relax and have fun when I want a break from thinking hard over chess positions.
