About me

I am a National Chess Master/Original Life Master, chess instructor/coach, chess event promoter, and author of "The Richter-Veresov Attack: Qd3 Variation;” an original and innovative chess book, which is the first of its kind with this variation (Mongoose Press, 2023). I currently reside in Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.

I am available to provide chess lessons/classes, exhibitions, lectures, promotional events, and publications. For additional information or to request my services please contact me here or at: fleischman.e@yahoo.com

Playing experience

I am a United States Chess Federation (U.S.C.F.) National Master (1987) and Original Life Master (2019) with a peak U.S.C.F. rating of 2270 and a peak FIDE rating of 2175. As a lifelong New Yorker, I have been playing chess since I was 11 years old and have played competitively since 1981, when I was President of the Brooklyn College chess club. My most notable chess achievement is first place at the New York Open (Under 2200 Section), in 1993.

I have several notable Zugzwang games, with the best game taking place during the Marshall Chess Club Senior Championship in 2024 against an Original Life Master. The game was published in the Marshall Chess Club newsletter. My most famous Zugzwang game was against a former World Junior Champion at his simultaneous chess exhibition in New York City, in 2019. In 2002, I placed first in the Open Section of the Chess-In-The-Schools Chess-In-The-Parks tournament in Central Park, New York, with more than 500 participants!. As a long-time competitive chess player, I have earned numerous first-place finishes – including strong results in tournaments, senior championships and events held at the famous Marshall Chess Club, as well as other chess venues in the New York City Metropolitan area.

I have over-the-board chess tournament and simultaneous exhibition wins and draws against the following Grandmasters and International Masters: (tournaments): GM Ilya Gurevich (agreed draw); GM Alexander Lenderman (draw); GM Alexander Goldin (draw); GM Sergey Kudrin (draw); GM Larry Kaufman (draw); IM Yuri Lapshun (win) (draw); IM Danny Edelman (win); IM Mykola Bortnyk (win); IM Jay Bonin (win) (draw); IM Tim Binham (win); IM Eli Vovsha (win); IM Irina Levitina (win); IM Ron Burnett (draw); IM M. Vucic (draw); IM Mikhail Zlotnikov (win) draw); (Simultaneous Exhibitions): GM Joel Benjamin (win); GM Leonid Shamkovich (draw); GM Michael Rohde (2 wins); GM Lev Alburt (draw); GM Nick DeFirmian (draw); GM Susan Polgar (win); GM Max Dlugy (win); WGM/IM Russian Goletiani (draw).

Teaching experience

I am a professional chess teacher; having more than 35-years of extensive coaching and instructional experience in the New York City Metropolitan area, while working with children and adults of all ages and skill levels. I am well-known for my clear and engaging approach to teaching opening, middle-game, and endgame strategies and techniques. My former top student, who was 13 years old at the time, beat a high ranked Grandmaster during a simultaneous chess exhibition by the Grandmaster. I have vast teaching experience at community centers, YMCA's, Yeshivas, public schools, and hobby and game stores. I have given several chess lectures on topics such as The Richter-Veresov Attack, and Zugzwang in New York City.
