VANTAGE: Double Rook Endgames at Tata Steel 2026
A Statistical Analysis using VANTAGE Material SearchI used VANTAGE to process the PGN files from the Tata Steel 2026 tournament. The goal was to test the "Material Search" feature by isolating a specific endgame scenario across three different tournament sections.
The Filter Criteria:
Using the visual interface, I filtered for positions containing exactly:
- 2 White Rooks vs. 2 Black Rooks
- No Queens
- No Minor Pieces

Here are the raw statistics generated by the database:
1. Masters Section (91 Games)
- Frequency: 6 games matched the criteria.
- Outcome: 0 Decisive / 6 Draws.
- Observation: In this sample, 100% of the double rook endgames resulted in a draw.
2. Challengers Section (91 Games)
- Frequency: 1 game matched the criteria.
- Outcome: 0 Decisive / 1 Draw.
- Observation: This specific material constellation occurred much less frequently in the Challengers group compared to the Masters (1 vs. 6) within the same number of total games.
3. Top Tienkamp (44 Games)
- Frequency: 4 games matched the criteria.
- Outcome: 2 Decisive / 2 Draws.
- Observation: Unlike the Masters section, 50% of the games reaching this stage in the Top Tienkamp produced a decisive result.
Conclusion
The VANTAGE Material Search allows users to quickly filter and quantify specific endgame occurrences across different datasets. The comparison shows a clear statistical difference in outcomes for this endgame type between the Masters and the Top Tienkamp sections. Beyond statistics, the tool provides direct access to replay and analyze the matching games immediately within the browser.
