The First Antichess World Championship

Over the boardChess variantTournamentChess Personalities
This blog post is about the first ever Antichess World Championship, played in 2001.

How it started

The players who participated in that world cup were all top level players on FICS at that time and they came together with this Idea, following the success of the 1998 Losing chess weekend in Geneva, Switzerland. The organisers of this tournament were Johan Bosman, Fabrice Liardet, Lenny Taelman and Vincent van der Bilt.
The event took place from 26th to 29th July 2001 at the premises of the Netherlands Bridge Federation, Utrecht, Netherlands. As the tournament was held in Europe, only a few European players came to participate, while no American was present.

Format

It was played in a 7 round swiss, at the end of which the standings were as follows:

As Liardet and Remmel were tied on points after 7 rounds, they played a tiebreaker match to decide the winner, which Remmel won.
The special prize for the best game was shared between the games of Remmel and Liardet and Wortel and Bosman, and the prize for the best ending went to the game between Sandström and Liardet.
The Round by round scores are as follows:

+ is for a win, = is for a draw - is for a loss.
Dirk Kraaijpoel’s absences from rounds 1 and 3 were for unavoidable professional reasons and he was credited with half a point for each round; the player left without a pairing for the round received the normal bye point.
