I took part in the Mauritius Blitz Championships 2025 and finished with 6/9, tying for 8th place and ending 11th on tiebreaks.

Coming into this event, expectations were naturally high. In 2024, I was the Mauritius Blitz Champion, finishing clear first with 11/13. This year, I couldn’t defend the title, but this tournament taught me more than last year’s victory.
I started strong with 4/4, including a very satisfying win with Black against a Candidate Master in Round 4. The opening prep was solid, my calculation was sharp, and I converted cleanly. Exactly, the kind of game I want to replicate consistently.

Then came the turning point: lunch
After that, the event became a real test.

In Round 5, I lost a critical game against the eventual runner-up. At that moment, I knew the title race was over, as the top two would finish on 8 points.
In Round 6, I lost again against another CM, another missed opportunity.
In the final round, I faced Board 1 of the Mauritius Olympiad 2026 team, and I collapsed in an equal position.

Key lesson:
At this level, good positions are not enough. Conversion, stamina, and emotional control, especially after setbacks, are what separate podium finishes from mid-table results.

What I take from this tournament:

  • My opening and early middlegame are competitive even against titled players
  • My decision-making under fatigue needs improvement
  • Blitz punishes even small lapses in focus, and it does not forgive burgers

I didn’t walk away with a trophy this time, but I walked away with clarity. Every tough loss highlighted exactly what I need to work on next.

Growth is not always loud. Sometimes it looks like learning the hard way and showing up stronger next time.
