The most amazing Positional Queen sacrifice in Chess History!

ChessAnalysisTacticsStrategyOver the board
Nezhmetdinov vs Chernikov - Certain key factors in the position made this Queen sacrifice very effective!

Hi all

One of the more intuitive and sensational Queen sacrifices I have seen in a master game is the following of one of my favorite attacking dynamic players Rashid Nezhmetdinov who was a friend of Mikhail Tal's and an important "Second" to Tal to help Tal win the 1960 World championship match. Mikhail Tal once said, "the happiest day of his life" was the day he lost to Rashid Nezhmetdinov :)

There are certain key factors of the positions that really helped this intuitive sacrifice be so dangerous and effective.

It all starts with Bf6:

40 minutes went by Waiting to offer a draw Excited by ran up to Chernikov - excited boy -

"mister he sacrificed his queen to you"

White plays Qxf6

Ne2+ seems sensible to distract the knight from d5:

The knight later returns to c3:

Things start to get coordinated on f6:

Later 21.Nxf6! tactical shot:

(the tactical point here is - if Bxf1 then Ng4+ Kg8 or Ke8 is then Bxe6 is crushing with Nh6 mate to follow - so Bxf1 would make things much worse for black)

Later Nxh7+!

(the tactical point here is if Kxh7 then Rh3+ will be mating after Kg8 Rh8 checkmate)

Later 23.Rh3!

https://lichess.org/study/BtYKB1bW/AndhGTze#45

(the tactical point here is if Bxf1 then Ng5 threatens Rh8 mate and also further probes f7 )

Later Bxf7+!

Rh8+

Key takeaway points

  • Positional queen sacrifices like this require consideration of specific issues in the position such as the weakened dark squares around the opponent's king
  • The presence of a knight outpost on d5 gives that Knight more power than usual
  • The coordination attacking point f6 is interesting
  • The precise tactical combination play is well calculated
